Kaneda wins national wrestling championship
Roosevelt High's Sadie Kaneda defeated Katherine Fulp-Allen of California over the weekend to win the 105-pound division at the United States Girls Wrestling Association National Championships in Lake Orion, Mich.
Kaneda was one of 11 girls from Hawaii who competed.
Lauren Primiano of Punahou lost in the championship match at 122, while Randolyn Nohara of Kamehameha won the third-place match in the over-165 division. Joleen Oshiro of Iolani placed fourth at 100, while Punahou's Robyn Mizuno and Chaneal Meletia of Kamehameha finished sixth at 134 and 138.
Seasiders win 86th straight
The top-ranked BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team breezed by No. 4 West Florida 9-0 yesterday in Pensacola, Fla.
The Seasiders (20-0) swept the doubles matches and dropped only one set in the six singles matches to the Argonauts, improving their winning streak to 86 consecutive dual matches. Amy Sun won her No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-0 and teamed with Judy Weng for an 8-1 win at doubles.
The No. 3 BYUH men's team lost to No. 2 West Florida 7-2, falling to 16-3 for the year.
Both teams remain in Pensacola, as the women play Montevallo (Ala.) today while the men play Ouachita Baptist tomorrow.
UH-Hilo golf finishes seventh
Nick Mason's 11th-place finish at the Aggie Invitational helped lead the UH-Hilo golf team to a seventh-place finish yesterday at El Macero, Calif.
Mason completed the three rounds with a 4-over 220 on the par-72 course. Kevin Shimomura, the leader after the first round, finished tied for 18th (222), followed by Colin Gilliam (T41, 229), Garrett Okamura (T51, 232) and Troy Higashiyama (T69, 239).
The Vulcans shot 895, while Cal State Chico won the event with a total of 865.
Sea Warriors sweep Toros
Zach Blatteis threw a three-hit shutout to lead the Hawaii Pacific baseball team past Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-0 at Carson, Calif., yesterday.
In the second game of the doubleheader, HPU rallied from a 3-0 deficit with five runs in the second inning en route to a 8-3 win. Alika Kuraoka led off the inning with a home run to right field and Geoffrey Say's double drove in two runs.
HPU (18-17) plays a four-game series at Cal State San Bernardino starting tomorrow.
Kuebler, Abele named All-Academic
University of Hawaii men's basketball player Michael Kuebler and Rainbow Wahine basketball player Jade Abele were two of 10 UH winter athletes named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic team yesterday.
Kuebler earned a 3.67 grade-point average in general business and was joined on the team by Paul Jesinskis (3.22, economics). Abele earned a 3.44 GPA in secondary education and was joined by Trisha Nishimoto (3.62, pre-education) and Milia MacFarlane (3.50, elementary education).
The women's swimming and diving team placed five members on the list, led by YingJuan Zhen's 3.75 GPA in communications. Also named were Katie Clewett (3.71, general arts and sciences), Jillian Saldana (3.48, biology), Stephanie Regucera (3.39, psychology) and Jessica Affleck (3.28, pre-medicine).
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.
Warriors drop to No. 6 in poll
The Hawaii men's volleyball team slipped a spot to No. 6 in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 15 poll released yesterday.
The Warriors (14-8) ended a three-match losing streak by sweeping California Baptist last Saturday, earning a split with the NAIA's top-ranked team.
Brigham Young (19-3) remained No. 1, receiving 14 first-place votes. Long Beach State (21-4), Hawaii's opponent this Friday and Saturday, stayed at No. 2, receiving the other two votes.
A win over Cal State Northridge had Pepperdine leapfrogging CSUN and Hawaii into fourth. Northridge slipped to fifth.
The Warriors were at full strength yesterday with the return of sophomore middle Mauli'a LaBarre (ankle sprain) and junior outside hitter Delano Thomas (throat ailment). The pair had missed Monday's practice.
Wahine volleyball recruits named to Fab 50 list
Two of the recruits signed by the Hawaii women's volleyball team were named to Volleyball magazine's Fab 50 list in the April issue.
Selected were 6-foot outside hitter Tara Hittle of Doherty High in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nickie Thomas, a 6-3 middle from Westwood High in Round Rock, Texas. The list of the top 50 players in the country is chosen by John Tawa of PrepVolleyball.com.
Named to the "30 Underclassmen to Watch" was Punahou School junior Aneli Cubi-Otineru, a 5-9 hitter who has verbally committed to play for the Rainbow Wahine.
Hawaii drops close match to UCLA
Katherine Belden and Kristina Kunkel scored two goals each as the UCLA women's water polo team defeated Hawaii 5-4 last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Bruins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and never trailed. Hawaii fell to 9-9 overall and 3-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
