Chinese rapper
returns April 9
AFTER canceling shows here a couple of times already, it looks like up-and-coming Chinese rapper Jin tha MC will finally return to make another appearance in Honolulu.
If you still haven't heard of Miami-born Jin Au-Yeung, the story goes like this: A young Asian kid grows up in a predominantly black and Hispanic neighborhood, and gets turned on to the ways of hip-hop before he's even reached high school.
In 2002 he is chosen to appear on BET's "106 & Park," and proceeds to serve all the other emcees for seven consecutive weeks during the show's "Freestyle Fridays" competition. The strong showing leads to Jin's signing with the Ruff Ryders (the same label DMX belongs to) and also helps land him a role in the sequel to "The Fast and the Furious."
All that's left to do now is release a full-length album, something the rapper hopes to do in July. Tickets are $15 for the April 9 concert at Volcanoes Nightclub, and all ages are welcome. A freestyle rap battle is planned, and Hawaii's own Kutmaster Spaz will be in the house. Call 808-934-9889 for more info ...

Kaila Yu, who didn't look too happy to be at the Wave, performed one song (in front of the stage where the audience blocked her from being seen, no less) before hightailing it out of there. And Kid Capri, after getting behind the decks an hour and a half after I was told he'd be spinning, played it safe with a bunch of radio hits.
By 3 a.m., I was more interested in hitting Eggs 'N Things than sticking around to see if things got any better. What a disappointment ...
