Kai scores again as U.S. defeats China

JIANGSU, China » In the biggest game of a three-match exhibition tour of China, Hawaii sophomore Natasha Kai came up even bigger for the U.S. Under-21 women's soccer team. Kai helped the U-21 team defeat the Chinese Women's National team 2-0 before an estimated crowd of 9,500 at the Jiangsu Huaian Sports Stadium yesterday.

Kai assisted on the first goal of the game, by Rutgers' Carli Lloyd 17:41 into the game. Lloyd returned the favor as Kai found the back of the net less than two minutes later (19:30). Kai also received the first penalty of her international career when she was given a yellow card nine minutes into the second half.

In Kai's first stint with the U.S. national team, the Hawaii forward has scored three goals in three games with the U-21 team. The U.S. returns from its trip today.

Hawaii softball loses in Stanford Classic final

Hawaii's bats were silent yesterday against Stanford ace Dana Sorenson (15-4) as the Rainbow Wahine lost 1-0 to the Cardinal in the title game of the Stanford Classic in Palo Alto, Calif..

Sorenson tossed a no-hitter, striking out 13, and Catalina Morris' RBI single in the fifth was all Stanford (27-7) needed for its fifth win of the tournament. Hawaii pitcher Melissa Coogan battled with Sorenson most of the game but didn't get the defensive support she needed. Coogan retired the first two Stanford batters in the fifth inning before giving up a single to Jackie Rinehart. Katherine Hoffman reached on an error and Morris' single brought Rinehart home.

Hawaii (18-19) begins Western Athletic Conference play this week against Texas-El Paso. The two-game series is Friday (5 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m.) at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

UC-Riverside rout UH-Hilo baseball team

Hawaii-Hilo stranded runners in three of the first four innings and couldn't take advantage of several scoring opportunities as UC-Riverside shut out the Vulcans 8-0 yesterday at Wong Stadium. John Riverside pitched a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out three.

UCR brutalized three different Hawaii-Hilo pitchers, with Kyle Neuberger getting the loss. The Highlanders left 10 runners on base and had one fewer hit but still managed the rout.

Wahine drop three spots to finish 13th

Hawaii freshman Sara Odelius led the Rainbow Wahine golf team to a 13th-place showing at the Mountain View Collegiate hosted by Colorado and Colorado State.

Odelius tied for 12th with a 9-over-par 225 as Hawaii finished with a three-round total of 925 at the Mountain View Golf Course. The University of Denver (894) won the tournament, beating Iowa State (902) and Colorado State (902) by eight.

Hawaii defeats Quebec in Rainbow Classic

The Rainbow Wahine water polo team concluded the 2004 Rainbow Classic with a 7-6 win yesterday over Quebec. Beth Novick and Darcy Scott-Hosaka each scored two goals as Hawaii withstood a late rally by Quebec. Hawaii finished the tourney with a 3-1 record.

UCLA won the tournament with a 5-0-1 record.
