Kahuku to play
Skyline in Utah

Defending state champion Kahuku is renewing its football rivalry with Skyline High School of Utah.

The Red Raiders visit the Eagles for an Aug. 21 nonleague game at the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The two schools split home-and-home games in 2000 and 2001. Skyline won the first contest in Salt Lake City 24-21, but Kahuku evened the series 19-14 on the North Shore.

"We scheduled them because they're consistently at the top in Utah's Division 5A (the state's top class)," Kahuku athletic director Joe Whitford said. "Every year, they challenge for the title."

Skyline lost to Hunter 23-15 for the Utah 5A state championship last fall.

Whitford visited Skyline last week and met with athletic director Steve Marlow to work out details.

The Red Raiders also made plans to visit the University of Utah and Brigham Young University campuses.

"We'll spend a day at each university so they can see the facilities and get a glimpse of what college football can be like," Whitford said. "BYU just completed its indoor facility and is putting the finishing touches on its football offices."

Whitford is thrilled the Red Raiders were able to schedule such top-notch national competition.

"It's hard for us to set up (nonleague) games here," he said. "Sometimes, teams don't want to play us."

Whitford also said the game gives the many Kahuku alumni living in the Salt Lake City area a chance to see their alma mater play.

The Red Raiders visited Lahainaluna on Maui and won 34-0 in their only preseason game last fall. Two years ago, they hosted national power Long Beach Poly (Calif.) at Aloha Stadium and lost 42-16.

Low, Hoist honored: Iolani's Derrick Low and Konowaena's Nancy Hoist are the Gatorade High School Basketball Players of the Year.

It is the third such award for Low and the first for Hoist. Both are seniors.

Roundup: The Hawaii High School Rodeo Association is holding its state finals at Parker Ranch on the Big Island on June 11-13.

Seniors Juddsen Napier of Waipahu and Alex Schuman will be back to defend their all-around titles.
