EACH YEAR, the Honolulu Printmakers selects an out-of-state juror for its annual exhibition. "It's always someone who is totally unfamiliar with any one person's works, for fairness' sake," says member Anne Irons. For the 2004 show, the printmakers decided on Toon Wegner, who hails from Holland.
Wegner also filled another crucial criteria to wear the shoes of juror: "It has to be someone internationally renowned, so we're in the mainstream of things," Irons says.
Interestingly enough, however, this show isn't Wegner's first contact with Hawaii's art community. Earlier this year, he was a participant in an art exchange between Holland and Hawaii titled "The Place I Live In." Hawaii held its show at Windward Community College earlier this year; currently, some of the Holland prints are on display at the art center in an upstairs gallery. Also, selected pieces of Wegner's work are on display in the regular gallery. Check it out.

Irons believes Wegner selected close to 130 prints for this year's show and that at least double that amount were submitted for consideration. In a juror's statement, Wegner shares his philosophy that printmaking is, "by its nature of multiples, the most democratic of ventures." Irons adds that because printmakers are able to duplicate their works, prints are more affordable art pieces to purchase than those of other mediums. All the more reason to go see the show, she says.
The Honolulu Printmakers 76th Annual Exhibition runs through April 11 at the Academy Arts Center, 1111 Victoria St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Call 536-5507 for more information.
