Wong-Fonoimoana make Main Draw

CAPE TOWN, South Africa >> A week after being bounced from a tournament early, the beach-volleyball duo of Eric Fonoimoana and Punahou alumnus Kevin Wong advanced to the Main Draw yesterday at the South Africa Open. Fonoimoana-Wong made it out of the 35-team qualification tournament with a 21-11, 21-12 win over Angola's Mario Silva and Miguel Xisto.

"We had a tough draw last week," Wong said in a release. "They just outplayed us. Today, we drew one of the newer teams on the tour. We created a lot of problems for them and forced a lot of mistakes."

Punahou products Stein Metzger (with Dax Holdren) and Sean Scott (with Todd Rogers) had already made it into the Main Draw.

Vulcans seventh at San Bernardino Classic

Hawaii-Hilo's men's golf team placed seventh Tuesday at the California State San Bernardino Classic, led by Nick Mason's seventh-place individual finish.

Mason shot 68-72-77--217 to lead the Vulcans. Colin Gilliam tied for 23rd and Troy Higashiyama tied for 36th to crack the top 40.

UH-Hilo now heads for the UC Davis Aggie Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.

Jayhawks beat Rainbow Wahine in tennis

Kansas beat Hawaii 5-2 yesterday, for the Rainbow Wahine's sixth straight tennis loss.

Kansas won all three doubles matches, then took four of six in singles play at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex. Hawaii's Renata Camargo and Kimbery Curtis scored the Wahine's only two points of the day with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

The Wahine next host Azusa Pacific on April 12.

UCSD a challenge, but BYUH wins again

No. 3 Brigham Young-Hawaii was down 2-1 yesterday in NCAA Division II tennis action, but battled back for a 6-3 win over No. 13 UC San Diego.

The match featured two of the top three doubles teams in the nation -- No. 3 Sameer Chopra and Jeff Wilson of UCSD handed BYU's top-ranked Jan Krejci and Hong-Tae Kim their first loss of the season.

But BYUH took the lead and the win with singles victories by Krejci, Kim, Dorian Porada, Leon So'onalole and Jeff Rice.

So'onalole also teamed up with Dillon Porter to claim the Seasiders' only doubles win.

BYUH hosts Division I Southwest Missouri State today.

UH sends 8 to NCAA swimming nationals

Eight members of the Hawaii men's swimming and diving team left this past weekend to participate in the 2004 NCAA Championships, today through Saturday at East Meadow, N.Y.

Cheyne Bloch, Tudor Ignat, Chad Thomsen, Peter Thew, Andrew Affleck, Kurt Boehm and Nimrod Palma have qualified for swimming events. Diver Mike Gowdy was an automatic qualifier and teammate Jonathan Coyle was selected as an alternate.

UH will enter four relays.

Rainbow Wahine water polo wins twice

Hawaii beat Brazil 17-4 and New Zealand 1 8-6 Tuesday at the Hawaii International Invitational water polo tournament.

Seven Rainbow Wahine scored against Brazil.

Hawaii hosts Santa Barbara at 6 tonight in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matchup at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Admission is free.
