Kapolei tops in
Electron Marathon

Less than a minute separated the top three teams in Saturday's 9th annual Hawaiian Electric Electron Marathon. Lap counters tallied 56 laps for Kapolei, while Castle and then Waialua posted 55 laps, separated by a mere eight seconds after one hour of racing. Iroquois Point Homeschool Association took Best of Show with the highest cumulative score.

Defending 2003 champion Sacred Hearts Academy was closing in on second triumph when its vehicle lost a wheel on a far turn in the 35th lap. That shut down driver Kristen Deboís bid for a second victory and opened the door for Iroquois Point, which completed 49 laps.

A crowd of more than 3,000 turned out to watch 25 teams from across the State compete on a closed, half-mile course at Ford Island. Of the 35 teams that took up the challenge to design, engineer and build a racecar, 25 made it to the starting line and 12 cars -- a third of the original fleet -- made it to the finish line.

Other awards are:

>> Best Documentation: Iroquois Point
>> Best Oral Presentation: Sacred Hearts
>> Construction and Safety: Kapaa High, Kauai
>> Best of Show: Kapolei (second place) and St. Andrews Priory (third place)

Long-time race viewers also singled out Kapaa for building one of the most appealing-looking vehicles in the nine-year history of the event.
