THREE STARS!: Kumu hula Sonny Ching, left, Peter Rockford Espiritu and Makana enjoyed the opening night VIP reception for Espiritu's cross-cultural dance concert, "Mareka me Venuse," at the Hawaii Theatre on Friday. A few numbers were self-indulgent, but Makana, the chants by Ching and N. Mehanaokala Hind, and a guest spot by Kaumaka'iwa Kanaka'ole, were standouts. "Undressed" captured the universality of dance.

AN ENTERTAINING "TRIP": Tom Holowach, third from left, talked with cast members Sam Polson, Jo Pruden and Rachel Schack at the opening night cast party of The Actors Group production of "The Trip to Bountiful" last Wednesday. Holly Holowach, Tom's wife, is making her Hawaii stage debut in the TAG show, and he'll be make his local debut later this spring in "Camelot" at ACT.

BABA B IS BACK!: Baba B. left, talked backstage with Chris Carillo and Mass Appeal honcho Duane Oyama as the "Island 98. 5 Bomb Bucha" concert went off at the Waikiki Shell on Saturday. While most of the "island music" fans were enjoying the show from the "grass" seats, Big Teeze, J. D of B.E.T., and members of the Pipeline Band and Natural Vibrations, partied in the VIP area
