EPA cites Kauai building project

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered Bali Hai Villas LP to stop unauthorized stormwater discharges from a residential construction project in Princeville, Kauai.

The agency also cited the company for failure to implement stormwater pollution controls and for failure to have a permit to discharge storm water.

If the company fails to comply with the order, it could face fines of up to $32,500 per day, per violation.

The EPA and state Department of Health inspectors in January found the company:

>> Did not properly install fences to control silt from runoff.
>> Failed to install pollution protection at storm drains.
>> Failed to prevent discharges of pollutants from construction activities.
>> Began construction before receiving a stormwater permit.

Neighborhood plan up for review

Residents of the Kalihi, Palama and Chinatown areas are being asked to review an economic development plan for their neighborhoods.

A community meeting will take place tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at the Farrington High School cafeteria. Area landowners, businesses, nonprofits and government agencies have worked with residents to form an initiative to promote development, education, safety and strong families. The meeting will give stakeholders a chance to review the initiative.
