UH's Kai scores quickly with national soccer team

SHANGHAI, China >> It took just three minutes for Natasha Kai to score her first goal for the United States Under-21 women's soccer team.

In the first of three exhibition matches, Kai, a Hawaii sophomore playing in her first international match, found the back of the net quickly as the U.S. took a 3-0 lead in he first 24 minutes en route to a 4-0 victory over Shanghai SVA on Sunday.

Penn State's Joanna Lohman (16th minute) and Virginia's Sarah Huffman (24th) all scored early. In the second half, Nandi Pryce (UCLA) scored the final goal off a pass from Carli Lloyd (Rutgers).

U.S. goalkeepers Jenni Branam (North Carolina) and Nicole Barnhart (Stanford) had a quiet day as the U.S. defense only allowed SVA to get a single shot on goal the entire match.

The U.S. plays the Chinese Youth National Team on Thursday. The U-21s then face one of the toughest tests in their young careers Sunday when they play the full Chinese National Team.

3 potential starters on injured list for Islanders

Defensive specialist Eddie Klaneski, wide receiver/defensive back Gabe Amey and quarterback Brian Ah Yat of the Hawaiian Islanders were placed on the short-term injured list because of nagging injuries yesterday, and will miss the team's first two games.

"These are three guys who could have been starters," Islanders coach Cal Lee said in a statement. "We have a good group of guys so we'll just have to work harder at practice this week."

Also, six players were re-assigned to the arenafootball2: Justin Colbert, Jaron Cunningham, Neal Gossett, Jonathan Kauka, Fabian Manumaleuna and Johnny Wayfer.

Although the 21-man roster was announced today, Lee and his coaching staff can adjust the roster until the team departs for Fresno, Calif., this Thursday, where the Islanders open the season Saturday at Central Valley. Their first home game will be April 17 against Bossier-Shreveport.

Season's best performance earns WAC honor

Hawaii's Dale Gammie was named Western Athletic Conference women's golfer of the week yesterday after her performance in the Donnis Thompson Invitational last week.

Gammie, a freshman from Pukalani, Maui, finished in a tie for second place with rounds of 75-72-74--225 at the Kaneohe Klipper Course. That was the best finish by a Rainbow Wahine this season.

Men tied for 14th: At Santa Cruz, Calif., the Hawaii men's golf team is tied for 14th place with a 610 total after two rounds of the 58th Western Intercollegiate being played on the 6,445-yard Pasatiempo Course.

Matt Kodama is the top Warrior with a 3-over par 143, good for a tie for 20th place.

Ben Douglas and James Beston have a 154 total after two rounds. Rounding out the UH team are Pierre-Henri Soero (159) and Kellen-Floyd Asao (168).

Colorado, Georgia Tech and California are tied for the team lead with a score of 562.

The final round is today.

Lynch-Yokomoto take title in Aloha Section tourney

John Lynch of the Koolau Golf Club and Beau Yokomoto of the Pearl Country Club parred the first extra hole to win the Aloha Section PGA Big Island Candies Scotch 4-Ball Championship at the Hapuna Course yesterday.

Brian Sasada and Kirk Nelson of Makena Resort, who led after the first round, finished second. Both teams finished at 10-under par 134.

Defending champions Kevin Hayashi and Lance Taketa placed third with a 135.

Seasider tennis team continues to roll

The Brigham Young-Hawaii top-ranked women's tennis team won its 80th consecutive dual match yesterday with an 8-1 victory over Hawaii-Hilo at the BYUH Courts.

The Seasider women's next matches are at Montgomery, Ala., where they will face Alabama State, Prairie View A&M and Tuskegee on Saturday.

The BYUH men also defeated the Vulcans 7-2 to improve to 11-2 for the season.

Wahine water polo team ties Canada

The Hawaii women's water polo team, unable to capitalize on numerous close shot opportunities, settled for a 6-6 tie with Canada yesterday in the Hawaii International Invitational at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Hawaii's Makana Whitford tied the game at 6 with 1:08 left in the final period. In the final minute, Canada's goalkeeper stuffed three UH shots within 2 meters to seal the tie.

Shannon Carroll and Beth Novick each scored two goals for UH while Audrey Harrer and Malia Tarayao had single goals.

Sea Warriors sweep Dominguez

The Hawaii Pacific baseball team swept a doubleheader from Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday by scores of 4-2 and 11-2 at Aloha Stadium.

Cruz Hatanaka got the win in the seven-inning opener with Josh Ervin earning the save with one-third inning of relief. Zach Blatteis went the distance in the seven-inning second game, allowing six hits.

Greg Benoit and Billy Wright each had two hits in the opener for the Sea Warriors (12-15). Kyle Stanley, who hit his first home run of the season, had four runs batted in and Kyle Stanley added three in the second game.

Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 9-26.

UH tennis team loses to NAIA's Azusa Pacific

The Hawaii men's tennis team was defeated 6-1 by Azusa Pacific, the top-ranked NAIA team, at Azusa, Calif.

Jamie Migia was the only Warrior to win, beating Tom Jelsman 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Hawaii plays Westmont today.
