MIRAMAX FILMS
Ben Affleck plays a widower who tried to rebuild his life after the death of his wife, played by Jennifer Lopez in "Jersey Girl."

Opening this Friday in theaters:

"Japanese Story": Toni Collette and Gotaro Tsunashima star in this tale about a feisty Australian geologist who's forced to show a Japanese businessman around the mines and deserts of the Pilbara to sell his company on geology software she's been developing. She finds the businessman to be inscrutable, annoying and arrogant; his view of her isn't much better. Things go from bad to worse when they become stranded, changing the nature of their journey. (Debuted at fall's Hawaii International Film Festival.) (R)

"Jersey Girl": Ben Affleck and director Kevin Smith pair up again for this romantic comedy about a Manhattan music publicist who loses his wife (Jennifer Lopez), leaving him a single dad. He loses his job and moves back to his father's (George Carlin) New Jersey home, where he meets a woman (Liv Tyler) who opens him up to love again. (PG-13)

"The Ladykillers": The Coen brothers and Tom Hanks remake the 1955 Alec Guinness comedy classic. Hanks plays an eccentric professor-turned-criminal mastermind whose plan to rob a New Orleans riverboat casino goes awry, thanks to the seemingly innocent landlady of the house he and his three accomplices are staying in. (R)

"Never Die Alone": Rap star DMX gets his first lead role in this action-thriller centering around a stylish drug dealer, King David, who returns to his hometown seeking redemption but ends up only finding violent death. David Arquette plays an aspiring journalist who is the recipient of a cassette from King David that is part story, part poetic sermon of the life of the dealer. Based on Donald Goines' book. (R)

"Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed": The gang returns to face an anonymous masked villain who wreaks mayhem on Coolsville with a machine that re-creates classic Mystery Inc. foes of the past. Shaggy and Scooby feel left out of the investigation, so they go off on their own to search for clues. (PG)
