Lovers, newlyweds prefer Honolulu

Honolulu ranked as the best city for lovers and one of the most popular U.S. destinations in a survey of America's favorite cities.

The third annual study by America Online and Travel + Leisure magazine ranked Honolulu as the top city for honeymoons and anniversaries, as well as for romantic and sexy getaways. In addition, it ranked No. 1 for celebrating Valentine's Day.

The survey was based on the responses of nearly 500,000 AOL members on 25 popular travel destinations.

Honolulu also ranked first for its weather, overall quality of life and local pride. It finished second behind San Diego as the best place to spend the holidays overall. It also was No. 2 for cleanliness and friendliest people.

However, the city wasn't considered an ideal place for meeting someone new. Honolulu finished last in that category.
