Twenty-six high school teams from across the state gathered Saturday at Ford Island to take part in the ninth annual Hawaiian Electric Electron Marathon. Student drivers competed in self-built electric vehicles to complete the greatest number of laps in 60 minutes on an electric battery charge. Kapolei High School's Jared Lum rounded the corner in an all-aluminum, 180-pound car. According to instructor Scott Kinney, Lum and other members of the Kapolei Electron Marathon Club dedicated approximately 500 extracurricular hours to complete the race car, which won first place.

Team Waialua High School members Jovi Lo and Joshua Gonsalves carried aluminum paneling as their teammates dismantled their electric car after the race. The three-wheeled, front-wheel drive, push-pull steering vehicle placed third and will go to the nationals to compete in Portland, Ore., where the team won first place last year in the high school division.
