Queen's tour begins
The Queen's Tour of Waikiki's historic sites resumes April 1. The tour sponsored by the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association focuses on sites associated with Hawaiian royalty, ancient healing and Duke Kahanamoku, with a Hawaiian historian and storyteller as a guide.
The tour is free and runs two hours, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center's Fountain Courtyard. Call 737-6442 for information or reservations.
Born on the range
Calving season has begun at Piiholo Ranch, with the season lasting approximately two months, ending May 15. This means guests will be able to see the young calves while trail riding through the range near Piiholo Hill just above Makawao Town on Maui.
Ranch owner Peter Baldwin says, "The cows are bred to calve specifically during this period because it's the best time for grazing, just past the winter rains and the soil is full of moisture. The warmer days bring the best growing season of Kikuyu and Pangola grass along with clovers."
Guests can get a view of the calves from their horses during the course of a three-and-a-half-hour Morning Picnic Ride, two-hour Midday Ride, or two-hour Private Ride.
Note that wranglers do not allow guests off the horses to avoid spooking the new moms.
