Lee ousted from NCAA tournament

Saint Louis standout Travis Lee got caught up in his own kind of March Madness yesterday.

Cornell's Lee, who was the top-seeded wrestler at 133 pounds, lost 6-3 to Zach Roberson of Iowa State in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships at St. Louis, Mo. He is one of only two top seeds who will not be competing in the title matches today.

Roberson caught Lee with a pair of takedowns in the first period and eluded him the rest of the way. Trailing 6-0 with an entire match in front of him took the 125-pound national champion off his game.

"I didn't wrestle my style," Lee said. "When you are down you have to be more active, but I tried to force my style on him. One thing about moving up in weight is that I didn't get to see these guys as much."

It was the second time Lee found himself trailing yesterday.

Lee advanced to the semifinals by pinning Matt Sanchez of Cal State Bakersfield after six minutes, 22 seconds to make up a 3-0 deficit.

Lee will wrestle third-seeded Johnny Thompson of Oklahoma State tomorrow for the right to compete for third place. Thompson's career has been marked by his mastery over Roberson, but Thompson was kicked out of the main draw by sixth seed Josh Moore of Penn State, leaving a No. 6 and No. 5 to compete for the championship.

The 133-pound bracket is the only one that does not contain either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the final.

"I'm pretty disappointed," Lee said. "But this happens every day in the national tournament."

Huang and Mackey All-Americans again

Rainbow Wahine diver QiongJie Huang earned All-America honorable mention honors in the 3-meter springboard dive at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Texas A&M yesterday.

Huang finished 11th with 484.30 points and earned first-team honors in the 1-meter on Thursday. Freshman swimmer Nicole Mackey earned her second honorable mention honor after placing 13th in the 100-meter back with a time of 1:00.85. On Thursday, she earned honors in the 100 fly.

The championships conclude today.

Rainbow Wahine drop Tokyo in softball

Kea Yamaguchi worked Tokyo pitcher Yuko Nakamura for a walk with the bases loaded to give the Hawaii softball team a 5-4 win in 10 innings at the Hawaii Invitational yesterday.

Paula Blanning went the entire way for the Wahine (16-14), facing 43 batters and only giving up two earned runs.

Blanning surrendered a run to Tokyo in the bottom of the ninth. Noelle Izumi singled home Yamaguchi to keep the game going. Blanning then struck out a pair of hitters with runners on first and second in the top of the 10th to set up Hawaii's winning effort in the bottom of the inning.

Denise Dahlberg and Tyleen Tausaga each paired hits for the Wahine and April Crowell drove in a pair of runs.

Metzger and Holdren eliminated

Punahou graduate Stein Metzger and beach volleyball partner Dax Holdren were eliminated from the Brazilian Open yesterday in Salvador, Brazil.

The duo lost to Iver Horrem and Bjorn Maaseide of Norway 14-21, 22-20, 15-10 to finish 13th in the tourney and will split $4,000.
