Student teams rev up electric

High school teams that are entered in today's ninth annual Hawaiian Electric Electron Marathon went through pre-race inspections yesterday in McKinley High School's parking lot. After inspections, Dante Demccutac, right, drove the Kapaa High School entry from Kauai.

Allen Kafchinski, driving in a prone position, test-drove the entry from Honokaa, Big Island. Twenty-six high school teams from across the state will race their self-built electric vehicles in an endurance race that begins at 10 a.m. at Ford Island. The event is free to the public. Gates will be open from 7:30 to 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m. An all-military race will take place at 9:15 a.m.
