Collision kills man thrown from pickup

A Maui resident died and three others were seriously injured yesterday when they were thrown from the back of a pickup truck that was broadsided by a sedan.

The accident occurred at Kula and Haleakala highways near Pukalani. Traffic investigators said the driver of a 1994 BMW sedan was headed toward Kula on Old Haleakala Highway about 10:30 a.m. when she entered the intersection and broadsided a Ford pickup truck, which was headed toward Pukalani on Haleakala Highway.

Three people in the bed of the pickup truck were thrown from the vehicle, police said.

One of the truck's passengers, identified as Alfredo Sacro, died at the scene. Three others were taken in serious condition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Hilo suspect charged in identity theft case

Police have charged a 33-year-old Hilo man in an identity theft case involving a credit card, checkbook and other items taken from a car parked at Akaka Falls State Park.

Jesus Santos Perez was charged Wednesday with second-degree identity theft, second-degree attempted theft and second-degree forgery.

Perez allegedly used a credit card stolen from a car Feb. 21 at a Wal-Mart store.

Detectives investigated the use of a stolen credit card at a Wal-Mart store in Hilo to buy $660 in stereo equipment.

Police identified the suspect as Perez.

He was held overnight at the Hilo cell block in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Police arrest 2 after soda machine break-in

Community police staking out several local businesses in Hilo caught a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman allegedly breaking into a soda machine Tuesday.

Police officer John "Masa" Pagay said Hilo police expect to clear more than 40 such cases involving 20 vending machines and other property damage.

Police acted on complaints from local businesses in the Hilo Industrial Area, which had had soda machines broken into.

Pagay said the culprits targeted the industrial area after dark probably because few people were around. The burglars would pry open the machines to remove the currency but left the coins.

Police also noticed that the culprits often disabled the machines by pulling out the plug or unscrewing the lighting that illuminates the area.

The two suspects were arrested for criminal property damage and possession of burglary tools.

They were released pending further investigation.
