Owana gets New Orleans
jazz fest invite


Owana Salazar and her Hula Jazz Band will perform in the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival April 30 and May 1. Owana sings and plays acoustic and steel guitar. This is the first time in the festival's 35-year history that a Hawaii act has been invited. The huge fest runs April 23-May 2. Headliners include Dave Brubeck, Harry Connick Jr., B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt and many more big stars. Owana's CD, "Hula Jazz," will be out soon ...

Some of the town's top jazz performers are cutting loose on the lawn of Kawaiahao Church each Wednesday through April 7. Pianist Betty Loo Taylor, sax player Gabe Baltazar, bassist Steve Jones and singer Clay Naluai will get it on this Wednesday at noon. And it's all free. Hallelujah! ...

Star-Bulletin's birthday

It was three years ago last Sunday that Canada's David Black saved the Honolulu Star-Bulletin by buying it from Liberty Newspapers. A birthday celebration for the paper and MidWeek was held at Ala Moana Center stage Sunday afternoon. Many shoppers enjoyed entertainment by various acts. Tiny Tadani was emcee. Vili Fehoko, the UH football team's warrior mascot, was a popular attraction ...

Nora Meijide-Gentry, Mihana Souza, Kanoe Cazimero and Ipo Cluney helped me mark my 37th year with the Star-Bulletin last Saturday by taking me to lunch at Neiman's Mariposa ... Sen. Dan Inouye walked briskly into the Star-Bulletin Monday, looking much younger than his 79 years. The senator was invited to meet with our Editorial Board ... Hats off to coach Riley Wallace and the UH basketball team for their stunning upset over Utah State in the NIT. Go Bows! ...

Four Doctors and a Patient -- Drs. Jorge Camara, Timothy Lee, Reuben Guerrero and Bradley Wong and "patient" Chris Cerna -- will perform in the Aloha Medical Mission's 20th Anniversary Concert next Saturday, 7 p.m., in Blaisdell Concert Hall. Carole Kai is emcee. The event benefits AMM, which has sent 61 medical missions to Asia, Africa and the Big Island. Cerna, who is blind, is one of 200,000 people who have been treated by AMM's professional volunteers ... New Zealand's Stewart Macpherson arrived with the music charts last week to prepare for his "Rock Legends" show at the Concert Hall April 23-25. The show will feature music of the Beatles, ABBA and Queen and will be performed by 40 members of the Honolulu Symphony hired for the show. Barry Potts conducts ...

Flower Ladies' bouquet

Joanne Trotter and Phyllis Guard have been volunteer Flower Ladies for the Academy of Arts for 40 years, creating lovely floral displays throughout the academy. In honor of their service, Timothy Y.C. Choy gifted the academy with a jade object d'art from his collection. A volunteer group of Flower Ladies has been creating floral displays ever since the academy opened in 1927 ... The Mid-Pacific Open is scheduled April 15-18 at the Mid-Pac course. Some of the top names in Hawaii golf have won the tourney. They include: Ted Makalena, Jimmy Ukauka, David Ishii, Larry Stubblefield and Lance Suzuki. Defending champ is Regan Lee ...
