Be aware, say bears

More than 3,000 teddy bears of all sizes, shapes, colors and textures, including those up to 6 feet tall, will be gathered at Pearlridge Center Uptown on April 3 for the Seventh Annual Teddy Bear Round-Up, sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii and Partners for Prevention.

The public is invited to donate a new or gently used teddy bear or stuffed animal that day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first 1,000 families making a donation will receive a gift, a blue ribbon promoting child abuse prevention, and child-safety information.

The round-up, also featuring entertainment and appearances by Winnie-the-Pooh and other cuddly costumed characters, is the highlight of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.

"Our goal this year is to collect 3,566 teddy bears -- the same number of confirmed reports of child abuse in our islands last year," said Elsie Foster, Teddy Bear Round-Up co-chairperson.

Bears will be distributed to family shelters, children's hospitals and other organizations helping families and children in crisis. As many as 50,000 children may be abused or neglected each year in Hawaii, with only 10 percent reported. For details, call 951-0200.
