Kodama claims state amateur golf title
University of Hawaii senior Matt Kodama carded a final-round, 2-over 74 to win the Hawaii State Amateur Stroke Play championship by a stroke yesterday at the Pearl Country Club.
Kodama, the second-round leader, finished with a 287 in the 72-hole event. James Beston shot the low round of the day with a 70 yesterday to leapfrog into second with a 288.
Third-round leader Del-Marc Fujita ballooned to an 80 yesterday to finish third at 290.
Waipahu wins AJA baseball championship
Waipahu scored 13 runs in the second inning to claim the Oahu AJA baseball championship tournament title yesterday, 18-4, in a game called after seven innings at Ala Wai Field.
Waipahu used 10 hits and four walks to take a 15-0 lead against Sheridan. Timo Donahue drove in three runs on 4-for-5 hitting, while Brent Shimokawa, Nathan Numata and Daren Akiyama all had three RBI for the winners.
Sheridan forced a second game in the double-elimination tournament with a 24-21 victory earlier yesterday. Sheridan scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 24-15 lead then held off a ninth-inning rally by Waipahu.
Waipahu advances to the State AJA Tournament on Maui, April 3-4.
Sea Warriors take 2 in PacWest softball
Hawaii Pacific pitchers handcuffed Chaminade on a combined three hits in taking both ends of a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader, 4-0 and 6-0, at Central Oahu Regional Park yesterday.
In the opener, Malia Sullivan (4-1, 0.96 ERA) gave up two hits in her second shutout of the season. In the second game, Jennifer Baron's two-run homer was one of 14 HPU hits. Clerisse Lemke earned the win, giving up no hits through five innings.
HPU improved to 11-2 overall, 5-1 in PacWest. Chaminade fell to 4-16 and 4-6.
