Wahiawa board to hear
sides on camp eviction
Residents of Poamoho Camp will appear at tonight's Wahiawa Neighborhood Board meeting seeking support to stave off eviction.
Representatives of landlord Del Monte Fresh Produce (Hawaii) Inc. and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which represents the camp's pineapple workers, are also scheduled to make presentations to the board.
Del Monte gave the camp residents 120-day notices to vacate Feb. 10. The company said it does not plan to renew its lease for the 2,200 acres of agricultural land just outside Wahiawa, including the camp, when the lease expires June 30.
Del Monte needs to tear down the camp before it returns the property to landowner George Galbraith Trust.
The company said the variety of pineapple grown at Poamoho is not what customers are demanding. Del Monte grows a sweeter variety in Kunia.
About 300 people live in the camp. All are pineapple workers, retirees and their families.
Tonight's meeting starts at 7 at the Wahiawa Recreation Center.
