UH diver Huang qualifies for NCAAs
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. >> Hawaii sophomore diver QiongJie Huang finished second yesterday in the 1-meter springboard competition at the Zone E Diving Regionals, qualifying her in a third event for the NCAA Championships later this month.
Huang set a school record in the 1-meter with 538.15 points. The People's Republic of China native earlier qualified for the 3-meter and springboard events at the March 18-20 championships hosted by Texas A&M.
Rainbow Wahine junior Maggie Roberts finished seventh yesterday with 477.85 points. She is "on the bubble" for advancing, according to UH diving coach Mike Brown.
For the Rainbow Warriors, Michael Gowdy placed sixth with 482.40 points. Jonathan Coyle (424.95 points) placed 18th, while Justin Wilcox (243.55) finished 21st.
The regional continues today with the 3-meter competition. The meet concludes tomorrow with the platform event.
Sea Warriors split in softball
The Hawaii Pacific women's softball team split a non conference doubleheader with Point Loma Nazarene yesterday, losing 4-2 and winning 4-2, at the Lady Sea Warrior softball field in Kaneohe.
Holly Garcia's two-run home run to left in Game 2 gave HPU an early 2-0 lead. The senior first baseman also tied the school's career homer record with 11.
Mallory Anderson improved to 2-0 with her first complete-game victory.
HPU (10-2) takes on Chaminade on Sunday in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Central Oahu Regional Park beginning at 1 p.m.
3 Seasiders named academic All-American
Led by sophomore C.J. Fellars, Brigham Young-Hawaii had three basketball players named to the Academic All-American team announced yesterday.
Honored were Fellars, an accounting major with a 3.62 GAP; junior Spencer Lynn (biology, 3.50) and senior Beau Nobmann (international business, 3.38).
BYUH rolls over Portland
The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's tennis team romped Portland 7-1 yesterday behind a sweep of all singles matches.
Adrienn Hegedus led the charge by defeating Cristin Sammis 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles flight as all five Seasiders women won their singles matches without dropping a set. The No. 6 singles wasn't completed due to rain.
BYUH took two of three doubles matches as well, losing only in the No. 3 position.
Next up for BYUH is a date with Bryant University on Monday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
