Jazz will never look so good, nor ballet ever sound so hot, when Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal visits the Leeward Community College Theatre this weekend. The company's credo is "We are jazz in all its forms. The music and its derivatives, the approach and philosophy." As Canada's most traveled cultural ambassador, the company spends a major part of every season traveling to cities large and small worldwide. Celebrating its 28th anniversary this season, it has won the world over with a style that fuses the elegance and excitement of dazzling movement with the rhythm and emotion of jazz.
Eclecticism has represented the company's principal niche since 1998. With the appointment of Louis Robitaille, the former principal dancer of the Grands Ballets Canadiens, as artistic director, the company entered a new era, and renewed its objective to become the leading contemporary dance troupe in Canada.
A company with a contemporary repertoire, Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal is dedicated to the creation, production and distribution of works inspired by the spirit of jazz and other musical genres. The works in the repertoire combine classical technique with a variety of dance styles and artistic disciplines.
