April gets off
to strong start
NO FOOLING -- the first weekend in April should be a good one for concerts here in Honolulu.
It's too late to pick up tickets for blink-182's sold-out show on April 3, but there are still plenty of seats available for the "Battle of the R&B Heavyweights," taking place the night before at the Blaisdell Arena.
Headlining the April 2 concert is 29-year-old Ginuwine, one-time member of Da Bassment, a production crew led by Timbaland that also featured the vocal talents of Missy Elliott and the late Aaliyah.
Other acts scheduled to perform that night include Jagged Edge, Avant and Keke Wyatt. Hawaii's own Jonah Moananu will also be onstage. Tickets are going for $49 and $59, depending where you want to sit, and are available at all Ticketmaster locations as well as the Blaisdell Box Office ...
WOULD YOU rather take it back to the old school? The first weekend in April also brings Grammy Award-winning songstress Jody Watley to town, where she'll perform three nights at Gussie L'Amour's starting April 1.
Watley, who began her career in the mid-'70s as a dancer on "Soul Train," was a founding member of the group Shalamar before launching a solo career in 1982. She went on to enjoy success with songs like "Don't You Want Me," "Looking for a New Love," "Everything" and "Real Love."
Three-night advance passes (good for all three shows) are currently available at Gussie's and the Gold Zone in Wahiawa for $20 each. The price goes up to $23 on the day of show. Call 836-7883 ...
WHILE FORMER pancake waitress Camile Velasco and Maryknoll High School senior Jasmine Trias are getting all the ink for making it to the finals of "American Idol," another Hawaii resident quietly made her debut on national television last weekend.
Waikiki's Lindsey Austin was chosen to participate in "Switched Up," a reality show on ABC Family that takes two individuals and makes them switch lives for a few days while the cameras roll. A boat captain and avid surfer, she was switched with Hollywood voice actor Scott Weinger (who also played Steve Hale on the sitcom "Full House") during the show's season premiere.
If you missed Austin's appearance, keep watching ABC Family at 7 p.m. on Sunday nights for Kailua's Donnel Nunes. He'll be on the show with Melissa Rivers -- yup, Joan's daughter -- and give up a life of surfing, mountain biking and kayaking to take on Hollywood. Stay tuned ...
