Seasiders draw No. 2 seed in West Regional
The Brigham Young-Hawaii basketball team is seeded second in the NCAA Division II West Regional and will face seventh-seeded Alaska-Anchorage at 12:30 p.m. Friday in San Bernardino, Calif.
The Seasiders (22-5, 12-3 Pacific West Conference), who qualified for the tournament by winning the PacWest title, are the only team from Hawaii participating in the national tournament.
It is the first time these teams are facing each other since early in the 2001-02 season, when the Seasiders won two games in Anchorage. The Seawolves (20-9, 10-8 Great Northwest Conference) lead the all-time series 11-5.
This is the third straight year the Seasiders, who hosted a regional last year and were upset in the first round, qualified for the tourney.
Hawaii-Hilo was left out of the tournament despite moving up to No. 9 in the final regular-season West Region polls. The Vulcans (16-9) were upset by Chaminade at home Saturday, allowing Chico State to hold on to the No. 8 seed with a 17-10 record.
The winner of the regional will advance to the NCAA Elite Eight in Bakersfield, Calif.
Wahine drops Malihini title game
The Hawaii softball team lost to Long Beach State 3-1 in the Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament yesterday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Wahine (15-13, 6-3 tournament) claimed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. But the 49ers (17-4, 7-0) took the lead with Lauren Johnson's two-run home run in the sixth.
To get to the title game, the Wahine beat Charleston 3-2 and Southern Illinois 1-0 yesterday.
Hawaii players on the all-tournament team include Denise Dahlberg, catcher; Noelle Izumi and Tyleen Tausaga, infield; Stacey Ritter, designated player; and Shannon Tabion, who pitched a perfect game Saturday, pitcher.
Vulcan baseball team drops 2
The Hawaii-Hilo baseball team fell to 5-21 after dropping a doubleheader to Western Illinois yesterday 3-0 and 5-3.
Vulcans starter Brian Ebbs pitched a solid first game, going the distance and giving up just three runs on seven hits, but didn't get any run support from the Vulcans offense, which was shutout by Leathernecks starting pitcher Tom Pazdernik.
The Vulcans offense fared a little better in game two as Kaliko Oligo went 2-for-4 with a double and triple. The Vulcans took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning, but the Leathernecks scored three runs in the inning for the final 5-3 margin.
HPU swept too: The Hawaii Pacific baseball team was swept by Tampa 9-3 and 7-4 yesterday to fall two games below .500 for the year.
Sea Warriors starting pitcher Mike Pelsnik was hammered for five runs in 2 1/3 innings as Tampa scored in each of the first five innings to roll over Hawaii Pacific in game one.
The Sea Warriors returned the favor in game two, getting a leadoff home run from Geoffrey Say in scoring four runs in the first two innings to build a 4-0 lead. Tampa roared back with four runs in the third inning and eventually pulled away for the victory.
