The Department of Theatre and Dance is collaborating with musicians and artists from the music and art departments to present an expanded dance concert titled "Music, Art and Dance Fest!"

Musicians will accompany diverse dance forms and art department visuals on stage, while the upper and lower lobbies of Kennedy Theatre will be transformed into a gallery.

The fest opens with hula kahiko directed by Vicky Holt Takamine, followed by a piece choreographed by Eve Walstrum Sanders. Next, ballet dancers will be paired with musicians in a piece directed by Grant Okamura, with original music by former UH music faculty Armand Russell.

Another former music professor, Neil McKay, will have his music played by the UH Jazz Ensemble, accompanying a choreographed work by Director of Dance Gregg Lizenbery.

In a work choreographed by dance faculty Peggy Gaither Adams, music and visuals will be provided by cellist Diane Rubio and composer/shakuhachi player Martin Regan, and the art department's Don Dugal.

Two more works choreographed by Adams include a sand dance to Neil McKay's "Sof' Slippa," with help from the jazz ensemble, and a duet featuring tap dance Wayles Haynes and composer Ernie Provencher on upright bass.

Choreography by dance faculty Betsy Fisher will be combined with readings of the poetry of 2000 Poet Laureate Billy Collins, and a live jazz performance.

Flowing, jewel-toned costumes will drape the eight dancers in a piece created by new faculty Kristi Burns. Her work features a vocal score by music department faculty Takeo Kudo.

The finale of this eclectic extravaganza will be a collection of hapa haole hula, choreographed once again by Takamine, music arranged by McKay for the jazz ensemble, and vocalists under the direction of Karen Kennedy.
