Iolani, Kahuku set
to defend their titles
The Iolani boys and Kahuku girls teams defend their titles this weekend in the Chevron State Wrestling Championships at Blaisdell Arena.
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Raiders are going for their 13th state title. They've won 12 in the past 20 years.
Two Raiders -- Kyle Muraoka at 152 pounds and Isaac Ickes at 215 -- are top seeds in the tournament.
Muraoka won the 145-pound class a year ago.
Five other boys champions from last year are among the top four seeds in various weight classes this year -- Iolani's Aaron Ishikawa (103 champ, second seed at 112), Saint Louis' Brandon Low (112 champ, top seed at 119) and Ben Wilmore (130 champ, second seed at 140) and Baldwin's Kodi Shepley (119 champ, third seed at 125).
On the girls side, Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku is going for its third straight championship, led by top seed Amanda Aquino (98).
Four girls champions from a year ago are No. 1 seeds this year -- Roosevelt's Sadie Kaneda (103 champ, wrestling at 108), Kailua's Danyelle Hedin (125), Farrington's Laosamoa Misa-Uli (175) and Waianae's Chasity Molina (220).
A record 167 girls are entered in the tournament, along with 278 boys. Wrestling starts at 11 a.m. tomorrow and 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The championship and consolation finals are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Admission is $7.50 for adults and $5.50 for students. Parking is $4 before 5 p.m. and $5 after.
