Hawaii beats the Beavers to advance
and face The Citadel tonight at 6:35

The Hawaii Rainbows and The Citadel Bulldogs play for the first time tonight with the No. 1 seed in tomorrow's semifinal round of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament up for grabs.

Both teams improved to 2-0 in the tournament in yesterday's action at Murakami Stadium. The Bulldogs blanked Chicago State 5-0 and the Rainbows dealt No. 20 Oregon State its second consecutive loss 10-1.

UH coach Mike Trapasso will send Ricky Bauer to the mound for today's second game at 6:35 p.m.

Junior right-hander Stephen Bryant allowed just two hits in six innings, but had to survive a very shaky first inning. He hit a batter, walked three Beavers and needed 27 pitches to get through the inning.

Bryant fanned the leadoff batter on four pitches, then ran into control trouble. He walked Mike Lissman on a full count, hit Jacoby Ellsbury and walked Andy Jenkins to load the bases.

After a visit from UH pitching coach Chad Konishi, Bryant walked Shea McFeely to send Lissman home with the game's first run. Fortunately for the 'Bows, Aaron Mathews hit a sharp, one-hop grounder to Rocky Russo at third. Russo stepped on the bag to force Jenkins, then threw to catcher Matt Inouye, who tagged out Ellsbury.

"I just gathered my thoughts, threw strikes and kept the ball down in the zone after that," Bryant said. "My changeup was good tonight."

Hawaii received the same largess from OSU starter Kyle Aselton, who faced eight batters and walked five to help the 'Bows take a 3-1 lead in an inning that lasted 45 minutes.

With the bases loaded, Brian Finegan scored on a passed ball. Rocky Russo walked on four consecutive pitches to reload the bases. Designated hitter Nate Thurber then delivered a "Rainbow Hit," a two-out single up the middle to score Inouye and Josh Green, both on base via the free pass.

"We didn't execute tonight, but we put hits together. I'm very proud of the guys because we will have to win some games that way," Trapasso said.

"I can't say enough about the job Stephen did. He basically overcame some major adversity. He's a tough kid and we need that kind of toughness now."

The 'Bows batted around for the second time in the four-run third inning, which began with a walk to Russo. Andrew Sansaver singled to right after failing to sacrifice. Thurber singled to left, scoring Russo, Sansaver stopping at second. Greg Kish blooped a single into right after failing to sacrifice, loading the bases.

All runners were safe and Sansaver scored when OSU shortstop Tony Calderon bobbled Schafer Magana's ground ball. Thurber scored on Robbie Wilder's fielder's choice grounder and Kish came home on Finegan's safety-squeeze bunt to give UH a 7-1 lead.

Hawaii took a 9-1 lead in the fifth when Kish singled to right to start the inning and, after Magana walked, both runners advanced on a balk. Finegan's single to left scored Kish, and Magana came home on Inouye's sacrifice fly to right.

Another plus for the Rainbows was three hitless innings of relief by sophomore right-hander Rich Olsen, who had struggled his previous two outings. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.

Hawaii pitchers now have allowed just three hits in the first two tournament games.

The Citadel 5, Chicago State 0
Mark Egleton and Andy Phillips combined on a six-hit shutout for the Bulldogs (4-4, 2-0). Jon Aughey tripled to start the game and scored on Josh Starkley's sacrifice fly for the only run The Citadel needed.

Chris Ard, Matt Matulia and Trent Weathers had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.

Paul Darby pitched a complete game for the Cougars (0-5, 0-2), striking out seven while walking no one.
