FullBlownSoul
hits Studio 1

UNIVERSITY of Hawaii at Manoa professor Theo Gonzalvez seems to have San Francisco's Filipino musicians on lock -- after bringing founding Invisibl Skratch Piklz member DJ Yogafrog to town last year, he's following up with a performance tonight by underground hip-hop collective FullBlownSoul.

With support (and funding) from UH, MC Jo_Ill will rock the mic at Studio 1 alongside singer Golda Supanova and her band, Da Supafrenz. DJ C-Money is also supposed to make the trip to Honolulu in order to provide an aural assault with his trusty turntables.

The fun starts around 8 p.m. tonight at Studio 1, and it'll cost you $5 to get in ($3 if you come before 8 p.m.). Call 956-8700 for more info ...

AND IF you're reading this early in the day, there's still a chance to catch local reggae mainstay Ooklah the Moc one last time before they head off on a tour of the West Coast.

Following concerts at Bikini's Sports Bar, Philip Paolo's and Pub Kagami, the band plays at the Kapiolani Community College Cafeteria today from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Admission is free. Once the guys get back from that big rock known as the mainland, the plan is to release a new album, titled "Rearrange Your Positive." Keep an eye out for it ...

TOMORROW NIGHT, self-described "One Man Ska Band" Chris Murray returns to Honolulu for a performance at Anna Bannanas, starting at 9 p.m.

Former member of Canadian ska group King Apparatus, Murray comes back just six months after a minitour here that took him to Kemoo Farms, Manoa Garden, Coffee Talk, the KCC Cafe and Anna's. Following shows in Arizona and Southern California, he'll play here before heading off to gigs in Mexico next weekend.

And as was the case the last time Murray was in town, you can bet the guys from Go Jimmy Go will be in the house and onstage at Anna's tomorrow night. Cover is $6 for this one; ska fans 18 and over are welcome. Call 946-5190 ...

SPEAKING OF Go Jimmy Go, one of its members has a pretty busy weekend lined up. Trombonist Fernando "The Love Machine" Pacheco will be at Anna's tomorrow, but on Saturday his other band, Pimpbot, celebrates the release of their new album with a party/concert at the Wave Waikiki.

Following up on last year's "Demo Mucho Supremo," the new record, "Vertical Lobster," continues the ska-punk vibe Pimpbot is known for, with traces of jazz, hip-hop and salsa thrown in for good measure. The No-No Boys and Missing Dave will open things up, and a casting call for the band's upcoming music video will also take place. Doors open at 9 p.m. for those 21 and over; call 941-0424, ext. 12 ...
