Penny Felimer Kalani: She was the class organizer; now she needs help

Home-baked specialties warm the heart -- and in the case of the "Pennies for a Heart" bake sale, that's true in more ways than one.

The Sacred Hearts Academy class of 1984 is foregoing a 20th reunion to focus on a sister in need. Class president Penny Felimer Kalani has been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, amyloidosis, and is awaiting a heart transplant at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Her classmates have begun a campaign to help Kalani with her medical bills and to generate awareness about the disease. A bake and garage sale, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14 at Sacred Hearts Academy is the centerpiece of that campaign.

Amyloidosis is a disease in which proteins called amyloids are deposited in body tissues.

Donations may be sent to any First Hawaiian Bank for the "Classmates of Penny Felimer Kalani" account, or visit the Web site created for Kalani, www.sha84.com.
