Bruins complete sweep of Vulcans
KAILUA-KONA >> Hector Ambriz's two-run home run in the first inning set the tone early for UCLA yesterday and the Bruins went on to rout Hawaii-Hilo 12-1 in a nonconference baseball game at Simmons Field.
UCLA (9-3) outscored the Vulcans (4-18) 47-6 in sweeping the four-game series. Winning pitcher Wes Whisler (1-0) scattered four hits, striking out seven, and walking one over six innings.
Hilo scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth Sean Tamura's RBI-double to center that brought in Daniel Rhodes, closing the gap to 6-1. The Bruins blew open the game with a six-run ninth.
The Vulcans next host Western Illinois in a four-game series. The games on Saturday and Sunday will be played here in Kona with the Tuesday and Wednesday games scheduled for Wong Stadium in Hilo.
"The Eddie" holding period ends
The Quicksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau three-month-long holding period, which began on Dec. 5, 2003, officially closed Sunday, forcing the competition to wait until next year.
"The Eddie" is an annual event at Waimea Bay to honor the late Eddie Aikau, who was one of Waimea Bay's finest as both a surfer and a lifeguard. Each year the event gathers 24 of the most skilled and dynamic big-wave surfers from around the world. Since its inception in 1986, the event has been held a total of five times, on days within the holding period when waves reached 20-plus feet -- just the way Aikau would've liked them.
"The Eddie" was last held on Jan. 7, 2002, with Kelly Slater claiming the title.
