Assistant coach Barry
leaves Wahine
Bob Barry has resigned as the assistant coach of the Hawaii women's soccer team.
"The main reason for my resignation is a major difference in coaching philosophy between Pinsoom (Tenzing, UH head coach) and myself," said Barry, who coached the Willamete men's team the previous season. "This includes team management. I accepted the job last year and decided that I would stay one year and then make a decision to continue or to move on.
"I felt that I was making some inroads, but since the end of the season there has been a total lack of communication. As you know, when there is this lack of communication, someone has to go and it isn't the head coach. I had hoped not to be perceived as a threat, but as an asset, but this just wasn't the case."
Barry, who coached Iolani, Saint Louis and Mid-Pacific boys teams for many years, also worked at the college level at Brigham Young-Hawaii, Richmond and Massachusetts.
The Rainbow Wahine, currently in spring practice, posted a 7-1 league record and shared the 2003 Western Athletic Conference title with Southern Methodist.
Barry sees a bright future for the team this fall.
"They have a great team and should challenge for a second consecutive WAC championship," he said.
Barry has been offered a couple of jobs, one of which is working with the Hawaiian Islanders' arenafootball2 team kickers.
"We have talked and I figured he could help us with the kickers. He was excited about it," Islanders head coach Cal Lee said. "I would be excited about having him help us. It's a definite go. I have a lot of respect for Bob with what he has done for soccer and Iolani."
Tenzing could not be reached for comment last night.
