USA Volleyball tryouts this weekend

USA Volleyball will hold High Performance tryouts this weekend at the Manoa Recreation Center for the national boys and girls youth and junior national teams as well as High Performance camps and developmental teams.

The boys' tryouts are from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The girls' tryouts are from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Athletes are encouraged to try out to gauge where they are at a national level, even if they have no previous elite-level experience.

The age groups are: High Performance Camp, girls born on or after Jan. 1, 1990, and boys born on or after Jan. 1, 1989; Youth National Team, girls born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, and boys born on or after Jan. 1, 1987; and Junior National Team, girls born on or after Jan. 1, 1986, and boys born on or after Jan. 1, 1985.

The Hawaii tryout is one of four nationally for boys and one of 11 for girls.

Online applications will be accepted through midnight tonight. The fee is $65.

This cost increases to $100 after tonight for either online or walk-up applicants. Forms are available at www.usavolleyball.org.

The tryouts include physical testing, drills and matches. Athletes should arrive dressed in practice attire and be prepared for the four-hour session.

Bruins rout Vulcans in baseball

KAILUA-KONA >> Two solo home runs in the first inning set the tone for UCLA yesterday as the Bruins went on to shut out Hawaii-Hilo 11-0 in a nonconference baseball game at Simmons Field.

Brian Beck (1-0) went the distance to pick up the win, scattering four hits while striking out six and walking none. He took the mound with a 2-0 lead, courtesy of homers by Brett McMillan and Wes Whislers.

UCLA (8-3) and Hawaii-Hilo (4-17) were to meet at 10 a.m. today in the series finale at Simmons Field.

Chrisman earns PacWest weekly honor

Brigham Young-Hawaii junior forward Jake Chrisman continued his stellar debut season in the Pacific West Conference by picking up his fifth Player of the Week honor yesterday, the second in three weeks.

Chrisman scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds to help the Seasiders defeat Hawaii-Hilo last Tuesday. The victory clinched the PacWest title for BYUH (21-5, 11-3).

Chrisman also scored 30 points in Thursday's loss to the Vulcans and 29 points in a win over Chaminade on Saturday.

For the week he had 83 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, five blocks and three steals. He shot 68 percent from the field (32 of 47), 60 percent from 3-point range (six of 10) and 76 percent from the free-throw line (13 of 17).

Wahine water polo team finishes seventh

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. >> The 10th-ranked Hawaii women's water polo team split its matches yesterday and finished seventh with a 2-2 record at the Gaucho Tournament.

The Rainbow Wahine defeated No. 8 Michigan 8-7, but lost to No. 6 California 10-9 at the UC Santa Barbara pool. Sophomore Kristy Bagnall scored seven goals in the two matches to lead Hawaii.

The Wahine (7-7) next host the Aloha Classic, March 20-21, at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center.

49ers drop Wahine in tennis

The Hawaii women's tennis team dropped its second consecutive match to a ranked opponent, losing to Long Beach State yesterday at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex 6-1.

Paige Mainor picked up the lone win for the Rainbow Wahine at No. 4 singles, defeating Alanah Carroll 4-6, 7-5 (10-5).

UH fell to 5-5, with all five losses coming against ranked teams.
