SAT-prep scholarships
target low-income students
College Connections Hawaii is offering scholarships to low- and moderate-income students so they can take SAT prep courses to improve their scores on the most popular college entrance exam in the state.
"One hundred points on the SAT makes a big difference in college options," said Wren Wescoatt, executive director of the educational nonprofit organization. "Any student can raise SAT scores with the right instruction, but it needs to be affordable."
College Connections Hawaii is offering scholarships for SAT prep classes offered this spring at seven locations. The six-week courses, generally held on Saturdays, normally cost $295. Students whose families earn $50,000 or less receive a $150 scholarship, bringing the cost down to $145; lower-income students, defined as those eligible for subsidized school lunch, receive a $250 scholarship, making the cost $45.
The courses will be held at:
>> Sacred Hearts Academy, March 13-April 24.
>> Molokai High School, April 6-24.
>> Waianae High School, April 17-May 22.
>> College Connections Hawaii Center (Kaimuki), April 24-May 1.
>> McKinley High School, April 24-May 1.
>> Mililani YMCA, April 24-May 1.
>> Windward Community College, April 24-May 1.
To register, students may obtain applications from their school counselor or sign up online at www.collegeconnections.org. The deadline is two weeks before the start date of each class.
