Mystery diver prompts Honolulu Harbor hunt
Federal and state officials searched Honolulu Harbor for a suspicious diver yesterday, the second search in a week.
The diver was spotted at about 10 p.m. Saturday around the Coast Guard ship Kukui, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Brooksann Anderson.
Last Monday, a diver was seen at about midnight around the Coast Guard station's 47-foot motor lifeboat off Sand Island.
"Right now we're not sure whether the two incidents are related," Anderson said.
Law enforcement searched the harbor until about 11 a.m. yesterday, scouring under piers and around docked ships.
Anderson said security at the harbor has not been heightened. "Everything is going to operate as normal," she said.
Japanese channel gives emergency news
A cable television channel is offering emergency news programs from Nippon Hoso Kyokai news in Japan should a major international emergency occur.
The service provided by Japan Network Group Inc. and Nippon Golden Network Inc., a pay channel on Oceanic Time-Warner Cable, was prompted by the Japanese Emergency Management Network Committee.
The tragedies of the Kobe earthquake in Japan and the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks showed a need for the Japanese community and visitors in Hawaii to have immediate access to news broadcasts from Japan, network officials said. Fifty-one hotels in Hawaii have access to the service.
Dennis Ogawa, president of Nippon Golden Network, said the network will unscramble one of its channels when it becomes necessary, and it will be available to those who have regular cable service.
