APSE Top 10 award

The newspaper’s UH football
special section is honored
by the AP

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin finished in the Top 10 for Special Sections in The Associated Press Sports Editor contest, it was announced last week.

[ art ] The winning entry for the national award was the Star-Bulletin comic book previewing the University of Hawaii football team's 2003 season. There was no official ranking for the honor, which was given in the 40,000-100,000 circulation category.

"We're very honored to win this award," assistant managing editor Mike Rovner said. "A lot of people were involved in all phases of this project. It's great to think outside of the box, but you have to execute it. And I felt we did."

Rovner was the point man for a team of a half-dozen journalists who were the key components on the editorial side of this three-month project that involved the advertising and production phases of the Star-Bulletin as well.

Rovner's right-hand man was graphic artist Kip Aoki, who drew the characters and played an integral role in the story line of the comic strip. Sports editor Paul Arnett wrote all the copy. Assistant sports editor Randy Cadiente and sports page designer Ben Henry, along with several other members of the sports staff, edited the copy and made numerous game-saving catches.

This award was part of the daily, Sunday and special section judging by The Associated Press.
