Kamehameha wins
ILH cheerleading
After winning a national title three weekends ago, the Kamehameha girls cheerleading team won its fourth consecutive Interscholastic League of Honolulu cheerleading championship yesterday at Saint Louis.
The Warriors totaled 283.5 points and earned a berth into the state championships along with Punahou and Iolani.
Kamehameha won using the same routine that brought home its second consecutive national title earlier this month.
"The highlight (of the routine) is the single-based stunting," said Kamehameha coach Dolly Wong. "We do that at the opening and have two girls for the base where normally other teams have three or four. It is pretty impressive."
Wong feels stunting is one of the keys to her team's success.
"We do really high level stunts and we work hard at making them look effortless."
Wong said her team also "takes a good hard look at every possible weakness and tries to improve on it."
Yesterday's win didn't come easy, as second-place Punahou, which totaled 256 points, gave the Warriors a run.
"They are athletic and never quit. They kept coming at us and had so many new things in their routine today," said Wong. "We really had to stay on our toes."
Kamehameha also won the D-II crown, besting Word of Life.
