Rain forces ’Bows to
play 2 games today

Artificial turf is one thing. A day of heavy rain and high winds is another.

The weather won yesterday.

The scheduled series-opening baseball game between the Hawaii Rainbows (8-5) and the San Francisco Dons (3-6) last night at Murakami Stadium was postponed until today at 1 p.m.

The rescheduled game becomes part of a rare doubleheader when coupled with today's regularly scheduled game. The second game will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game, not at 6:35 p.m., the time listed on published schedules.

Both games today will be nine innings. Right-handers Ricky Bauer and Steven Wright are Hawaii's scheduled starting pitchers.

Friday's game tickets will be honored for both games today. However, Saturday's tickets will take precedent in terms of seat assignments for today's second game.

With a per-game average of 1,222 fans attending UH games this season, there should be no problem finding a seat if a conflict arises between holders of Friday and Saturday tickets.

The last time the Rainbows played two games on the same day at home was against two different teams on the final day of the 2000 Rainbow Easter Tournament.

They last played a scheduled doubleheader in 1997 in a Western Athletic Conference series at Fresno State.

Two games have been canceled since artificial turf was installed in 1985 at Murakami Stadium.

Rain caused the final game of a three-game series with Notre Dame to be canceled in 1990. In 1999, the last home game of the season, a WAC game against New Mexico, was canceled. The 'Bows had already qualified for the WAC tournament and the Lobos had to play a tiebreaker at San Jose State two days later.
