Vigil recalls first
nuclear testing

The 50th anniversary of the first U.S. hydrogen bomb test in the Marshall Islands will be commemorated Monday at an interfaith vigil.

The service at 4:30 p.m. at Harris United Methodist Church, 20 S. Vineyard Blvd., is one of several throughout the national United Methodist Church expressing concern about the long-term health effects of U.S. nuclear testing in the area from 1946 to 1958. Bikini atoll remains uninhabitable after 50 years.

Members of the Honolulu Marshallese United Church of Christ congregation will be among participants in the vigil, which is open to the public.
