Hawaii trailing SMU in swim meets

Hawaii's men's and women's swimming and diving teams are both second to Southern Methodist after the second day of their respective conference championships.

"All day long, the cell phones are humming," said UH coach Mike Anderson, who is with the Rainbow Wahine at the Western Athletic Conference championships while the men are competing in the National Independent Conference meet. "I do love the fact that we're kicking butt in both places."

At Oakland, Mich., UH's Andrew Affleck broke his own pool record yesterday in winning the 500 freestyle in four minutes, 21.36 seconds. Teammate Cheyne Bloch set conference and pool records by winning the 200 individual medley in 1:46.37. Hawaii's Mike Gowdy finished second in 3-meter diving.

SMU's 326 points led the NIC heading into today's action. UH had 292 points.

At San Antonio, the Rainbow Wahine's 258 points were second to SMU's 334 at the WAC championships. "The kids are pumped," Anderson said. "Two years ago they were last at this meet."

Hawaii's Nicole Mackey and Yan Chen were 1-2 in the 200 individual medley. Mackey's 2:00.18 improved her WAC-leading mark and is an NCAA qualifying time.

UH's Dena Quick won the 50 freestyle in an NCAA qualifying and UH school record 22.72. Hawaii's Qiongjie Huang and Maggie Roberts finished 1-2 in 1-meter diving.

Jessica Affleck's 4:53.82 was also a UH record in the 500 free.
