Fest puts Japanese
culture on display

Organizers of the 10th annual Honolulu Festival expect more than 5,500 artisans, performers and spectators from Japan to take part in the cultural extravaganza next Friday to March 7 at several venues.

The festival, sponsored by the Honolulu Festival Foundation, is aimed at promoting cultural understanding, economic cooperation and ethnic harmony between the people of Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific region.

The theme of the festival is "Where Culture Comes Alive," and events will focus on 150 years of U.S.-Japanese relations. Activities will include performances, art exhibits, seminars and an educational program. The festival will be held at the Hawai'i Convention Center, Ala Moana Center, the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and the Honolulu Academy of Arts. It culminates with a parade along Kalakaua Avenue.
