The Pipe preps
for 2 concerts

TICKETS GO on sale this weekend for two upcoming concerts at Pipeline Cafe.

Led by front man Chris Carrabba, emo rock band Dashboard Confessional returns to Hawaii after playing at the former World Cafe in November 2002. They'll be in town this time in support of "A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar," which was released last August. Tickets for the March 26 show are priced at $20.

And on May 22, California-based rockers Finch will make their Hawaii debut at the Pipe. Described as a "cross between Jimmy Eat World and Glassjaw," the band was supposed to play out here a few years back, but problems arose and the show never came together. It'll cost you $17.50 to check them out onstage in May.

As usual, tickets for the concerts shows will be available at the Neal Blaisdell Box Office, all Times Supermarket locations on Oahu and online at www.ticketmaster.com. Call 877-750-4400 to purchase tickets by phone ...

UNDERGROUND HIP-HOP keeps on grinding at various places around town, but I still get the feeling that not enough people are supporting the scene to keep things fresh and attract quality acts from the mainland.

Maybe it was due to all the Mardi Gras parties taking place, but I was disappointed to hear that San Francisco-based Psychokinetics didn't draw well at the Wave Waikiki on Tuesday night. I got there too late to see Celsius 7, Spidey and DJ Denizen in action myself, but it seemed like just another Tuesday night at the club, judging by all the same faces I saw. You've got one more chance tonight to see the crew perform; call 941-0424, ext. 12, for details ...

ANOTHER EVENT worth mentioning is a new biweekly party called "Grand Theft Audio." Sean D., Ion Myke and the rest of the D43 crew have enjoyed success at Velvet Lounge on Thursday nights with "Connect Four," and are now incorporating live music and spoken-word performances into the mix at Studio 1 along with showcasing the best underground MCs and DJs from the 808 state. And after a kind of slow start on Feb. 13, they could surely use your support tomorrow night ...

AND IF you've got game when it comes to Madden 2004 for the PlayStation2, head to East Side Grill this weekend for the fourth "All Madden Challenge," hosted by former UH football player Michael Carter.

The fun is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Sunday at the bar, but get there early -- only 32 spots are available in the tournament. Call 368-7724 to register ...
