Honolulu Medical Group
building to become
Queen’s office
The Honolulu Medical Group building on Lusitana Street will be re-named the Queen's Physicians Office Building III and undergo a year-long renovation under an agreement between the medical group and Queen's Development Corp.
Queen's Development plans to modernize the building, which was built in 1973. The cost of the project has not been finalized, said Lynn Kenton, spokeswoman for Queen's Development, a for-profit arm of Queen's Health Systems.
"They are still working on schematics and developing final cost proposals," Kenton said.
Honolulu Medical Group will remain in the building as the anchor tenant, said Kimberly Rocha, administrator and chief operating officer for the group.
HMG sold the building to Queen's Development some years ago, but had always retained the master lease, Rocha said.
"So really it is our long-term lease interest that we are selling at this point," she said.
There are about 32 full- and part-time doctors in various specialties who belong to the medical group and practice in the building, Rocha said. That is down from a high of about 40. Under the new arrangement, Queen's Development will recruit physicians to lease remaining office space, Rocha said. Those doctors would operate independently of HMG.
Queen's owns and manages two other physician office buildings adjacent to the medical center.
"There is a demand for more physician space in our office buildings. This allows Queen's Development to offer space to physicians who have been requesting space for some years," she said.
During the renovation period, which begins in May, physician and medical services should continue with minimal disruption, Rocha said.
