Star-Bulletin has
key role in
‘50 First Dates’


The Sunday Star-Bulletin plays a key role in the hit Drew Barrymore-Adam Sandler romantic comedy "50 First Dates" that was filmed here and shows Hawaii's sweeping sunny beauty to cold mainland viewers. Drew's character suffered brain memory damage in an accident on a Sunday a year ago and cannot remember anything that happens after the accident. She and Adam's character hit it off one day but she can't remember him the next. This goes on day after day. Thus Drew thinks that each daily kiss between them is the first. Her family and friends keep the injury from her by making sure each day she sees the Sunday Star-Bulletin dated to the morning before the accident. Drew is excellent. Adam holds his own in a more sensitive role than he usually plays. Rob Schneider is woefully miscast as a Hawaiian. The pidgin English-speaking role, which is supposed to be funny but is not, and his portrayal will cause resentment here ...

Clooney remembered

It wasn't seen on the Grammy show but Tony Bennett dedicated his Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album award for "A Wonderful World" to his late friend Rosemary Clooney. The award was presented before the TV show. Rosemary was nominated in the same category for her "Last Concert" CD, made during her Honolulu Symphony Pops concert conducted by Matt Catingub ...

Part-time Hawaii resident Gordon Thompson III started working for Nike in 1987 and was named prez of Cole-Haan, which the giant shoemaker owns, in '99. He started the G-Line of footwear in 2000. The G stands for Gordon. Much of the line, for both men and women, has an athletic, sporty, look with comfort in mind. A reception was held Friday the 13th at Neiman Marcus for Thompson, who was celebrating his 44th birthday, and to introduce the new line. Thompson purchased an old home on Black Point three years ago that he had remodeled. He designed the interior. He also has a home in New York ... That striking flower display on Neiman's third floor is the work of ikebana master Kika Shibata of San Jose. She was assisted by her daughter, June-na Shibata. Kika was born in Japan. Her mom started teaching her ikebana at age 4 ...

The Academy of Arts ARTafterDARK program gets under way Friday with Kung Fu Friday! The monthly theme night is geared for young adults and the young at heart. Guests may check out the galleries and enjoy entertainment and contemporary sounds on the grounds, along with gourmet grinds by chef Mike Nevin in the Pavilion Cafe. Beverages include wine and beer.
