UH program to feature
Islamic dance
A program of poetry and dance from the Islamic mystical tradition will be presented March 6 at the University of Hawaii Campus Center ballroom.
Tickets are on sale for the program, to be sponsored by the Mevlevi Order of America, a foundation that teaches practices and traditions of the Sufi branch of the Islamic religion.
The 7:30 p.m. performance will feature sacred dance, known as Whirling Dervishes, accompanied by Turkish ceremonial music on reed flute, violin and drums.
Poetry by Rumi, a 13th-century Turkish poet, will be recited by local actors Dan Furst and Maile Rietow. The president of the Mevlevi Order, Postneshin Jelaluddin Loras, will lead the program.
Tickets are available at the Campus Center ticket office at $15 general admission, $12 for students and senior citizens, and $20 for front-row seats, and will also be sold at the door.
