3 renowned soloists join Lutheran concert

Three singers who have performed internationally will be soloists in March concerts of the "St. John Passion" by Johann Sebastian Bach at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu.

Baritone-bass Max van Egmond, of Holland, will sing the part of Jesus. He has performed Bach's music in a 40-year career of performances in Europe, Asia and the United States.

Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Lane has sung the works of composers from Baroque to modern at musical festivals worldwide.

Baritone David Newman sings opera, oratorio and chamber music in the United States and Canada and has appeared with music ensembles Tafelmusik and the Smithsonian Chamber Players.

They will be backed up by the Bach Chamber Orchestra and the Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir with local soloists soprano Georgine Stark, tenor Les Ceballos, tenor Joseph Z. Pettit and baritone Leon Williams. Carl Crosier will conduct.

Reservations may be made for the 7:30 p.m. concerts March 12-13. Tickets are $35 for reserved seats and $25 for general admission. Call 941-2566.

Retired bishop to talk about work with Arabs

Retired Episcopal Bishop Bob Jones will speak about his experiences as dean of a college in Arab East Jerusalem at a Monday program at Church of the Crossroads.

"The Outside to the Inside: Moving from the External Image to the Faces of Palestinians Today," will be the topic of the 7 p.m. lecture sponsored by the Friends of Sabeel in Hawaii.

Jones retired as bishop of Wyoming before spending four years as a teacher and administrator at St. George's College in Jerusalem. He recently accepted a position as interim rector of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Kalihi.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Voluntary calabash donations will be accepted.
