Guillermo opens Olympic Trials today
Waianae's Samson Guillermo will fight Sergio Ramos of Sacramento, Calif., today at Tunica, Miss., to open his campaign for a trip to Athens.
Guillermo, a 119-pounder who fights out of Marquette, Mich., will have to finish in the top two of the double-elimination tournament to earn a spot on the Olympic team. The top two fighters in the trials fight in Cleveland on Feb. 27-28 to determine who will represent the United States in Athens and who will be the alternate.
But that is a long way off for Guillermo, who faces a stiff challenge in Ramos. Ramos qualified for the trials by winning last year's national Golden Gloves title. Guillermo had already qualified and didn't participate in the Golden Gloves, and has never met Ramos.
If Guillermo beats Ramos, he would take on the winner between Northern Michigan teammate Roberto Benitez and Miguel Albares of Fort Collins, Colo.
