Wahine remain perfect in WAC

The Hawaii women's tennis team improved to 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference with a 6-1 win over UTEP yesterday at the El Paso Tennis Club.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-3) won the doubles point to start the day after Renata Camargo and Kana Aikawa defeated Danielle King and Tea Spirta 9-8.

Hawaii then won five of the six singles matches with Lauren Fitzgerald, Sylvia Jaros, Paige Mainor and Camargo winning in straight sets.

Assily plans to join Warriors in 2005

Kaiser High safety Chris Assily accepted a scholarship from the University of Hawaii football team on Saturday, but won't officially join the program until January of 2005.

Assily said he will enroll in school in the fall to better prepare himself academically. He will likely play linebacker for the Warriors. The 6-foot, 195-pounder also competed in basketball and track.

Kaiser head coach David Maieva, a former UH linebacker, said Assily will be a good one for the Warriors, who originally signed only three players with local ties. Assily is officially a grayshirt. He will participate in spring ball next year.

Hawaii upsets Blue Demons

The Rainbow Wahine softball team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to upset No. 13 DePaul 8-7 on the last day of the Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.

Denise Dahlberg's hit to left field scored April Crowell from second base to end the game. Crowell's run tied the game earlier in the bottom of the sixth and both teams went scoreless in the seventh.

Hilo homers past Eagles: Laura Kimborowicz, Kayla Kahuli and Natilie Fujimoto each hit a home run as UH Hilo swept Concordia (CA) 7-3, 7-3 yesterday at the UHH Softball Field.

Kahuli hit a solo in the first game while teammate Tara Martinez pitched a five-hitter. In the second game, Kimborowicz hit a three-run homer while Fujimoto's two-run homer broke a 3-all tie in the bottom of the third inning.

Silverswords sting Yellowjackets: Chaminade swept their second straight doubleheader from Montana State-Billings yesterday, winning 4-2 and 1-0 in a PacWest doubleheader at Palolo Field.

Loihi McKeague pitched a four-hitter and struck out five to win the first game. In the second game, Harmonie Martinez's single to left field scored Kelsi Kobashigawa in the first inning.

Chaminade improved to 4-4 overall, 4-0 in the PacWest. The Yellowjackets finished their road trip 0-8, losing four games each to Chaminade and UH Hilo.
