DALLAS >> The Rainbow Wahine basketball team came up empty-handed on a road trip for the first time this season yesterday.
Southern Methodist defeated Hawaii 74-65 yesterday at Moody Coliseum. It was just the third time in the series that SMU posted a victory. Earlier this year in Honolulu, the Rainbow Wahine dealt the Mustangs a 17-point loss, UH's largest margin of victory this season.
Hawaii (5-16, 3-9 Western Athletic Conference) lost its fifth straight game on a series of missed shots, missed rebounds and turnovers in the crucial final minutes.
"It's frustrating because we played so well at times, maybe as good as we've played all year at stretches of this ball game," said Hawaii coach Vince Goo. "But we had some mental lapses and we let them get runs on us, so it was frustrating. We just lost focus and didn't execute and didn't cover our people defensively or box out and get the rebound on defense. It was the little detail things."
Taking care of the details wouldn't have helped Hawaii against SMU's Andrea Cossey.
The hot-handed senior guard showered 3-pointers on Hawaii. Cossey had 20 points at the intermission and keyed a second-half run that put Hawaii away for good. She finished with a career-high 31 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field, including 7-for-10 from beyond the arc.
"She was unbelievable tonight. She had a very, very good game," Goo said. "She's played like this (before), maybe not 31 points, but we've seen her make shots like she did tonight."
Kaira White added 14 points and Kim Walter chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Mustangs (12-10, 8-5) shot 52 percent from the field.
Hawaii had one of its better offensive outings, putting up more than 60 points for the first time since the last time the teams met.
Freshman Janevia Taylor led Hawaii with 14 points and six steals. The Rainbow Wahine got double-digit performances from sophomore Amy Sanders (13 points) and junior Jade Abele (11 points, five rebounds).
"We played really well at times, but there were times we had mental lapses," Goo said. "We made a lot of mental mistakes and that's when they got back into the ball game."
Hawaii returns home today and will play Boise State on Thursday and UTEP on Saturday.
