Punahou will see
Aiea in big game

The defending champion kept
the ball on Kailua's half in
a lopsided 3-0 win

It's hard to get more one-sided than this.

Defending state champion Punahou showed why it's the favorite to repeat in the Ohana Hotels & Resorts State Girls Soccer Championships with a lopsided 3-0 victory over Kailua last night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park stadium field.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Buffanblu (11-0) play Aiea in the semifinals tonight at 8 p.m. Na Alii beat Hawaii Prep 2-1 earlier yesterday.

"It was a good first game for us," said Punahou coach Jorge Barbosa, whose team hasn't given up a goal all year. "We struggled with our scoring, but we moved the ball well and did a lot of things well except finish."

The ball was on Kailua's side of the field for most of the contest. The Surfriders (10-3-2) packed their defense in the first half and the strategy worked early on. But it was just a matter of time before Punahou connected.

After many early chances, including Kelsie Look's 25-yard blast that hit the crossbar, Buffanblu forward Ashley Collins beat a defender down a steep angle on the left wing and slipped a shot into the short side past Kailua goalkeeper Johnalynn Ilae for a 1-0 lead at the 26-minute mark.

Ilae had a busy night and made many tough saves as Punahou outshot Kailua 27-1.

"Punahou was very good, very aggressive," Surfriders fullback Cheri Yokoi said. "Every team wants to get to their level. But our defense did good and our goalie did excellent."

Thirteen minutes into the second half, Punahou got some help when a through ball caromed hard off a Kailua defender and past a stunned Ilae for a more comfortable 2-0 lead.

Ilae went down fighting when she attempted to jump and get Elizabeth Carlson's 18-yard bullet at the right post in the 58th minute. Ilae got a piece of the ball and she hit the post as the ball rolled in for the Buffanblu's 3-0 cushion. She hurt her ribs on the play, but Kailua trainer Ted Morikawa didn't think it was serious. Still, she went with her parents for X-rays to make sure.

"Their goalie was very good. She shut us down," Barbosa said. "We missed a lot of close ones, too, but she was right there and you've got to give her credit."

Kailua plays Hawaii Prep in a consolation game today. The Surfriders still have a shot to play in the fifth-place game.

"Punahou was fresh," said Surfriders coach Wil Kimura, whose team went through two overtimes and penalty kicks to beat King Kekaulike on Wednesday. "We were trying to play defense and Johnalynn did a tremendous job until she was injured. We tried our best and you have to be realistic against Punahou. We were hoping to keep them down and get to penalty kicks."

The Buffanblu know the competition is going to get stiffer the closer they get to the final.

"We're going to keep with our 'no-goal patrol' and take each team we play seriously," Carlson said. "We're not going to go into any game already thinking that it will be easy to beat a team."

Pearl City 4, Baldwin 1: Chelsea Arakawa, Chimene Sienkiwicz, Carisa Calpo and Kari Tanimoto scored for the Chargers (12-3-1) as they defeated the third-seeded Bears (10-2-3) and set up a rematch against OIA West Division rival Mililani in today's 6 p.m. semifinal.

Nga Nguyen scored Maui Interscholastic League champion Baldwin's lone goal.

Pearl City's semifinal tonight is a rematch of an OIA semifinal, which the Trojans won 2-1.

Mililani 4, Kalaheo 0: Raimee Ortega, Sarah Yoro and Nicole Harris scored as the second-seeded Trojans (12-2-1) routed the Mustangs (11-5). They also took advantage of a Kalaheo own-goal.

The victory put OIA champion Mililani one win away from a fourth straight trip to the state final with a shot at their second title in three years.

Aiea 2, Hawaii Prep 1: Jodie Toyama scored in the first half for Na Alii (14-1) and Tobi Kanehira added a goal in the second half for a 2-0 lead.

Ann Songphatanayothin scored the only goal for fourth-seeded Ka Makani (15-3) late in the game.

Waiakea 2, Hilo 1: The two teams competed against each other in the regular season on the Big Isle and ended up facing each other on Oahu, too.

Elizabeth Brauher and Keyawna Meeks scored for the Warriors (14-3), who will play Kauai in tomorrow's consolation final.

Lori Walker scored the Vikings' only goal. They finished 12-5.

Kauai 3, King Kekaulike 0: Holly Iloreta scored twice and Madison Perry added one goal for the Red Raiders (8-1-1). Na Alii finished their season 8-3-5.
